There is no present like the past. For Christmas, that is. So, to help guide you through the minefields of greatest hits packages, here’s a few reviews of some recent CDs courtesy of the shy ‘n’ retiring James Muretich and Dave ‘golden oldie’ Obee.
Jason And The Scorchers: Essential Jason And The Scorchers Vol. 1 - Are You Ready For The Country (EMI).
Long before pudgy performers in stetsons were thought to be oh-so wild on stage, there emerged from Nashville a band that combined the spirit of Hank Williams with that of Johnny Rotten. It was like hearing punk in the Grand Ole Opry. And this 22-song, 69-minute CD captures the very best of early Jason And The Scorchers, from original numbers to the band’s blistering version of Bob Dylan’s Absolutely Sweet Marie. Yahoo and sod off too. (J.M.)
