These will be the first Jason and the Scorchers shows since July 2002, when they played four dates in Texas. The band will feature the same lineup as it did then: Jason Ringenberg on vocals and guitar, Warner Hodges on guitar, Kenny Ames on bass, and Fenner Castner on drums.
Something to look for on this tour is whether the band will announce that Castner is the official drummer. If that happens, Castner will take Perry Baggs’ place. Baggs departed in May 2002 to pursue a solo career. Born on June 19, 1965, Castner has played with Tommy Womack, Swan Dive and Brad Jones. He also played on two tracks on Ringenberg’s 2002 album “All Over Creation.” Fenner has toured most extensively with Womack, and shares roots in Bowling Green, Kentucky with Tommy.
The Tommy Womack Band recently released a live album, “Washington, DC,” which they recorded in our nation’s capital last October for XM Satellite Radio. Castner helps propel Womack’s wry, witty and rocking songs along with his churning and crashing style. To purchase “Washington, DC,” please go to: http://www.tommywomack.com/wash_dc.html
These Midwestern shows will give the Scorchers a fuller chance to show what they can do with Castner. Castner brings considerable chops, focused energy, and balanced temperament to any band. The Scorchers rehearsed extensively with Castner last year to prepare for the Texas shows, and the results showed. Fenner knew the band’s repertoire so well that by the second night, Jason felt confident enough to dispense with the set list.
Still, Castner recently told me that it took until the last night of that tour for him to feel in the groove with the Scorchers. The gig in question was a private party at the Satellite Lounge in Houston on July 20, one night after a public show there.
Jasonandthescorchers.com will profile Castner and his career soon with a biography in the “Meet the Band” section.
