They are really nice folks over there, and they did a nice interview
with Jason a couple of months back.
As far as the Scorchers, Jason has hinted at a couple of his shows that
there will be some sort of commemorative or celebrative occasions in
the upcoming year, which will be the Scorchers' 20th anniversary year.
Jason and the Nashville Scorchers came into existence in Nashville in
the fall and winter of 1981. Their first date with Perry Baggs (replacing
Barry Felts) on drums was in Murfreesboro, Tn. on December 31, 1981.
This could be called their 20th anniversary date, or any number of early
shows in 1982 could also share that distinction.
Mammoth Records, who released the Scorchers' three 1990's albums, has
been essentially closed by their parent company, Disney. This was very
disappointing news for Scorchers fans. Mammoth founders Jay Faries and
Steve Balcom were Scorchers fans who helped the band reach a mass audience
again in the 1990's by signing them in 1994.
The Scorchers have been without a record company before, though. One
can only hope that if they do desire to record another album, this will
not stop them. Jason now has his own record company, Courageous Chicken.

One rumor regarding reissues of old material that was recently posted
by a knowledgeable fan to the Scorchers' mailing list, the Reckless
Country Soup, is that there will be two re-releases in the coming year.
1) The first is a compilation of the Scorchers' eighties work along
with some B-sides. This would encompass three record companies - Praxis
(1982-83), EMI (1983-87), and A&M (1990). Such a CD would be a terrific
addition to the Scorchers catalog.
By now, "Fervor" ('83) and "Lost and Found" ('85)
have been re-released twice. EMI did so in 1992 with "Essential
Jason and the Scorchers, Vol. 1: Are You Ready For the Country?".
EMI put out those two records again in 1996 with "Both Sides of
the Line", which they released almost exactly when Mammoth released
"Clear Impetuous Morning". Both those reissues are now out
of print.
A "Best of" eighties compilation would allow for a great deal
of latitude in choosing good cuts from "Fervor", "Lost
and Found", and the other two records from the eighties: "Still
Standing" ('86) and "Thunder and Fire" ('89). Both of
those are even more out of print, since they have never been reissued.
"Still Standing" is the hardest major Scorchers release to
find on CD. Copies of it average about $50 on Ebay.
2) The other rumored reissue is "Still Standing" itself, with
a few bonus tracks. Obviously, this would be a welcome relief to those
Scorchers fans who have wondered if they would ever see this album on
CD. Most fans do not have a CD copy of this important album. Perhaps
"Greetings From Nashville" will show up on there as a bonus
cut. This Tim Krekel song was recorded during the "Still Standing"
sessions, and it has since become a live staple of Scorchers live shows.
The Scorchers have played festival
dates in Nashville for the past few years. One would think that, at
the very least, we will see a couple of those dates in 2001. Here is
a link to the Dancing in the District festival, which is one of the
festivals they have played frequently. It also has a nice picture of
Jason: http://www.dancininthedistrict.com
Another member of the Scorchers, bassist Kenny Ames, is currently touring
with the alternative country band Dash Rip Rock. Here are some tour
dates for that band.
03/07/01 Wetlands Preserve New York, NY
03/08/01 The Sutler Nashville, Tn
03/09/01 The Masquerade Atlanta, GA
03/10/01 The Nick Birmingham, AL
03/16/01 Rotolo's Baton Rouge, LA
03/17/01 The Shamrock Monroe, LA
04/01/01 De La Salle Street Fair New Orleans, LA
04/27/01 El Matador New Orleans, LA
04/28/01 Hard Rock CafÈ New Orleans, LA
We'll just have to wait for the year to unfold before we see whether
the band will tour or record. Jason says in his interview with Miles
of Music reporter Dave Purcell that the Scorchers are "semi-retired":
"It seems to be what we are...we're not broken up, we're not finished....maybe
we're sort of like the Beach Boys of alternative country, we still do
shows and festivals when the vibe is right. But as far as making new
records...I don't know if that'll happen. It might, it might not."
Those of us who really want to see some new material and shows from
the band will perhaps keep in mind Jason's opening line to the crowd
during the "Midnight Roads and Stages Seen" concerts in Nashville
on November 7, 1997:
"As Rudyard Kipling said, 'He who rides the tiger finds it difficult
to dismount.'"
